NordVPN is a well-known VPN provider that conquered a place at the top with it’s great desktop app. But the android app is also gaining a lot of popularity. That’s why we decided to take NordVPN for android for a spin, in order to see if it offers the same quality as its Windows older brother. And, of course, we wrote a review about it, with our findings and opinions.
Safety and Features
The android app is actually very similar to the desktop version. The level of protection is the same, it uses the highest encryption available, an AES-256-CBC cipher, along with a 2048-bit DH key. The protocols are also the same: OpenVPN, IKEv2/IPsec, L2TP/IPsec and PPTP. As always, we recommend OpenVPN protocol, which is considered to be the safest.
Safety-wise, it’s one of the best apps out there. They were careful to include the same security features as the Windows app. From all the tools available, our favorites are:
- Specialty servers – Some of the servers let you connect with a double encryption (for the paranoid users). Other servers are made especially for P2P downloads, others offer an Onion over a VPN connection.
- CyberSec – If you turn this feature on, the NordVPN app will protect your android device against malware and phishing. It also works as an adblocker, taking away all the annoying ads from your browsing experience.
- Automatic WiFi connection – When this feature is on, the app will establish a VPN connection everytime your device connects to a WiFi Network. This is great for unsafe and public WiFi Networks. The user does not have to worry about being connected to an unknown WiFi network, because the VPN will protect the device automatically.
- Obfuscated servers – This option is useful in countries that block VPN connections, like China. It will obfuscate the connection, avoiding that such monitoring entities recognize it as a VPN. That way, there’s no danger of being detected and obstructed.
Naturally, encrypting and protecting your connection takes resources. That’s why every VPN slows down your connection speed. Fortunately, there are some VPNs that have a minimal speed loss. That was the case with NordVPN, we were very pleased with our speed tests.
Just like the Windows version, there isn’t a very noticeable speed loss with the NordVPN app for android. We tested several servers, and on average, there was a 10% speed loss when comparing to a connection without a VPN. Few VPN apps achieve such speeds.
The one month plan can be quite expensive, but the discounts increase with longer subscriptions. For example, the 1-year plan costs 6.99 dollars per month, which is much cheaper. It’s also very nice to know that they have a money back guarantee policy that lasts 30 days. Users can try it and ask for the money back if they don’t like the app.
It’s also important to mention that all of NordVPN plans come with 6 simultaneous connections. That means that a single user can protect several devices with one VPN account at the same time. Users can download the other NordVPN apps, like Windows and Mac, and have all their devices protected.
The NordVPN version for android didn’t disappoint. They made it to be fast and simple, for the users who want to have a VPN connection in seconds. It’s very clear that simplicity was one of the top priorities when designing this application. Even beginners will use this VPN app without any problem.
But that doesn’t mean it’s basic, far from it! it has advanced features designed to fully protect users and make them anonymous. In our opinion, this is exactly what makes this app stand out from the crowd. Such advanced and efficient tools are extremely easy to activate, with a single touch. The app does the rest, and the user does not have to worry about it.
